Status of biogenic amines in lungs of Mastomys natalensis during development of Brugia malayi infection

The levels of norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and histamine in the lungs of M. natalensis were altered during the prepatent, patent and latent stages of B. malayi infection. Histamine was raised significantly throughout the course of infection; nearly 2- and 4-fold increases were recorded during patent and latent phases respectively. The level of 5-HT declined during the prepatent period, while the level of catecholamines (NE and DA) increased markedly during this period.
