To determine the factors responsible for the sterilisation decision about 816 women in the reproductive age group were interviewed by administering an open ended schedule in a rural area of Haryana. More women from 'higher' castes accepted sterilisation as compared to the 'lower' castes. A greater proportion of women from the upper middle socio-economic strata accepted sterilisation. Tubal ligation acceptors had a better socio-economic status. Tubal ligation was found to be more popular, 78 per cent of the acceptors were in the age group of 25-34 years. The mean age of ligation acceptors was 30.4 years while it was 32.7 years in case of spouses of vasectomy acceptors. About 60 per cent of the couples accepting sterilisation had more than 5 living children and 69.4 per cent of the acceptors had 2-3 living male children at the time of the sterilisation.
