Proteolytic enzyme-induced morphological changes in all structural components of the living myelin fiber were studied in experiments with single surviving myelin fibers of the frog. Proteolytic enzymes caused structural myelinizing processes, in which incisurae, neurolemmocyte pericarion and axial cylinder, in addition to isthmuses participate. An increase in the intersegmentary space in the isthmus is due to the spread of the myelin stratification process away from the isthmus fissure, this process being accompanied by loss in the degree of structure constrast in this zone.
