In an experimental study the authors investigated the origin of the tubovesicular structures which can be seen to accumulate near the lesion in damaged postganglionic non-myelinated axons of the autonomic nervous system of vertebrates. In in vitro experiments, 24-48 hours after damaging the cat hypogastric nerve by in vivo ligation, the nerve was incubated together with the inferior mesenteric ganglion in nutrient solution to which vinblastine had been added. After 2-3 hours' incubation, typical paracrystals were formed in the axons, but the tubulovesicular structues did not disintegrate and they were not even damaged. The authors assume that these tubulovesicular structures are a specific modification of the endoplasmic reticulum in the axoplasm.
