In dogs of varying age and sex, the hypogastric nerve was ligated about 1 cm from the inferior mesenteric ganglion and changes in the nerve distal to the ligature were studied at intervals of from 20 days to 6 mo. after ligation. Regenerating axons which grew in a proximo-distal direction, despite the presence of the ligature, were observed and the axonal organelles were studied during degeneration and regeneration of the nerve. The degeneration and regeneration process in a damaged autonomic nerve is apparently not completed even within 6 mo. after injury.
