The ultrastructure of mefloquine and quinine resistant strains of P. berghei was examined. Electron microscopy studies revealed that in the sensitive strain of P. berghei the trophozoites possess numerous rod-shaped malarial pigment particles which lie within a vesicle. In the trophozoites of resistant parasites the malarial pigment particles were rarely visible. Trophozoites of the sensitive strain have one large food vacuole but in the trophozoites of the drug resistant strains there are 2-3 smaller vacuoles.
