Bentonite in the prevention and treatment of diarrheas in newborn calves

When bentonite was given 1-3 times daily to 240 new-born calves on 10 farms for six days, diarrhoea developed in 4 of the calves at an average age of 6.2 days; in 241 untreated controls it occurred in 53% at an average age of 5.7 days. When bentonite was given 2-3 times daily to 100 diarrhoeic calves previously given bentonite prophylactically and to 123 previously untreated diarrhoeic calves, the recovery rate was 96% in both groups. This recovery rate and the costs of treatment compare very favourably with those reported for antibiotic therapy.
