New-born Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein-Friesian, and Brown Swiss calves were inoculated i/v with chicken red blood cells (CRBC). The number of antibody plaque-forming cells (PFC) from the spleen, lymph nodes, thymus, and blood were determined by the Jerne plaque technique. The PFC in the spleen became most numerous at about 6 days after calves were inoculated with 6X109 CRBC. Holstein-Friesian, Ayrshire, and Guernsey calves developed similar numbers of PFC on the specific days of assay after the antigen was inoculated; Brown Swiss calves developed greater numbers of PFC than did the calves of other breeds. Non-inoculated control calves developed a few PFC or did not have PFC in the tissue assayed. The ingestion of colostrum did not affect the immune response of the calves to CRBC.
