Serum from new-born calves, piglets and lambs was examined for aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT), alanine aminotransferase (A1AT) and total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities. Calves and pigs had low initial values, whereas lambs had higher values comparable with those of human babies. AspAT and total LDH levels in all three species increased between 24 and 48 hours after birth, then fell. A1AT showed little change. These changes were not associated with colostrum feeding.
