In a trial with rumen fluid from stall-fed zebu and buffalo bullocks, DM and cellulose digestibilities in vitro were 90.1 and 84.8%, respectively, for berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum) against 67.5 and 64.5% for Napier grass leaves (Pennisetum purpureum) and 45.1 and 42.1% for wheat straw. When wheat straw was supplemented with an equal amount of Napier grass leaves or berseem, digestibilities were increased to 53.5 and 50.0% with the former and to 63.9 and 53.0% with the latter. No significant differences were found between the rumen innocula of buffalo and zebu in their effect on DM and cellulose digestibilities of wheat straw or in the production of total volatile fatty acids.
