Of eight strains of pectinolytic bacteria, using pectin as the only source of energy, isolated from the ruminal contents of fistulated sheep, four were identified as Bacteroides ruminicola, two as Streptococcus bovis, and two resembled Lachnospira multiparus. S. bovis decomposed pectin to oligogalacturonides which were not further utilized. B. ruminicola decomposed pectin extracellularly to a lower oligogalacturonide which was further utilized; galacturonic acid was also utilized. The presumptive Lachnospira strains decomposed pectin with the accumulation of galacturonic acid which was not fermented.
