Trauma of the soft femoral tissues in dogs was followed by death of nontreated animals within 3-4 hr. Intravenous injection of limited quantities of Petrov's blood-saline fluid 2 hr. after the appearance of 3rd degree shock produced only a temporary therapeutic effect in the majority of experiments. Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) administered in sufficiently large doses (60 μg/kg) contributes to a protracted stabilization of the pressor effect from injection of the blood substitute and to survival of animals.
