P.L. Ranelli comments that Carver and Colburn did not discuss the possibility of reinfection of women treated for Trichomonas vaginalis by their male sexual partners in their communication on metronidazole resistance (Clinical Pharmacy (1988) 7 718-719). The correspondent recommends the concurrent treatment of sexual partners of infected women, and that condoms should be used throughout the course of treatment. He concludes that recurrent infections should not necessarily be considered to be cases of metronidazole resistance. P.L. Carver agrees that male sexual partners should be treated, and that patients should be counselled about the use of condoms. She discusses patient compliance in metronidazole therapy, and remarks that men may become resistant to T. vaginalis infection or may have a spontaneous remission of infection.
