Serum samples from 11 dogs of a thyroiditis colony, and 69 apparently healthy dogs were subjected to immunodiffusion, passive haemagglutination (PHA), complement fixation and indirect immunofluorescence (FA). In addition, each dog was skin tested for delayed hypersensitivity. Precipitating antibodies were not detected, although PHA and CF antibodies were occasionally present. The FA technique, however, gave consistent results for antibody detection. The skin test was positive in early or inductive stages of the disorder. The presence of PHA and CF antibodies together with the FA staining pattern implicated both thyroglobulin and microsomal antigen in the pathogenesis of canine thyroiditis. The results are discussed in relation to human thyroiditis.
