Bovine mandibular lymphosarcoma

A 2-year-old Holstein which had been found dead and had a 2-day history of swelling under the jaw was presented for PM examination. Lesions were confined to the head and included extensive ulcerations in the left buccal mucosa and marked cellulitis in the intermandibular area. The left mandible in the area of the molars and premolars was thickened to about 3 times the normal size. The affected site was firm but contained irregular small soft foci. All of the premolars and one molar were missing, the second molar was displaced and the third loose. Microscopic examination of the affected tissue revealed areas of necrosis, infiltration by mononuclear cells which had darkly stained muclei and mitotic figures. The submandibular lymph nodes had lost their normal architecture and contained large numbers of neoplastic cells similar to those in the mandible. No other organs were affected. A diagnosis of primary mandibular lymphosarcoma with metastasis to the regional lymph nodes was made.
