Evidence is presented for differences in nutrient requirements for growth of purebred chickens. During laying hybrid crosses respond differently to diets marginal in total protein and methionine. Some crosses respond by reducing rate of laying, others eat more in an attempt to compensate for deficiencies, and others reduce egg size or deplete body stores.
