Ultraviolet spectrophotometric determination of propylthiouracil in assays and dissolution studies of tablets and capsules

An ultraviolet Spectrophotometric method is reported for the determination of propylthiouracil in tablets or capsules. The accuracy and precision of the method are comparable to those achieved with the official USP assay procedure for tablets. In addition, the proposed method is simpler and more rapid, consequently providing an advantage where large numbers of determinations are indicated, e.g., in the determinations of individual dose variations and in dissolution rate studies. The method presently reported is suggested as an alternative to the official USP XVIII procedure.
