Reduced activity of methionine synthetase is a sensitive indicator of vitamin B12 inactivation by nitrous oxide. The authors compared the activity of methionine synthetase in 13 placentae obtained from women in labour terminated by caesarean section under general anaesthesia with nitrous oxide and in 16 placentae of women delivered through the normal genital channel without the use of nitrous oxide. No significant difference was found in the activity of this enzyme in the palcenta between these groups.
