This was a study for the normal pattern and ultrastructure of the duodenal mucosa of Thai people using the light microscope, transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The population in this study were 30 cases, 18 males, 12 females, and the age was 20 to 71 years. They were free from gastritis, duodenitis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, esophageal varices, cirrhosis and malabsorption syndrome. The duodenal mucosa specimens were obtained through the fiberoptic endoscope. The duodenal villi were mainly of leaf-like and convoluted patterns. The branched villi were seen in six cases. Reference values (mean .+-. 2SD) for the height and the width of the villi were comparable to the previous studies of the duodenal mucosa. The height and width of microvilli and intermicrovillous space were comparable to the findings in the jejunal mucosa. This study had a narrower range of reference values than the previous studies.
