2 cases of Cryptosporidium infection (in a 19-month-old girl and a 9-month-old girl) were admitted to a Taipei hospital (Taiwan) with watery diarrhoea. There was no evidence of immune deficiency. Cultures for pathogenic intestinal bacteria and routine faecal examinations for parasitic infection by iodine wet mounts were negative but cryptosporidia were found when the acid fast stain test was used. One of the patients had bronchiolitis, cough, fever, vomiting, a rash and showed a patchy shadow on the right lung at X-ray, indicative of respiratory cryptosporidiosis. Following supportive treatment, the diarrhoea stopped and the patients were discharged. No cryptosporidial oocysts were present in the faeces 3 weeks after discharge. IFAT titres were positive in both cases.
