Gastric histochemical studies in endemic schistosomal hepatosplenomegaly

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in forty hepatosplenic schistosomal cases showed increased number of eosophagitis, oesophageal varices, hiatal incompetence, duodenogastric reflux, superficial and atrophic gastritis in late than in early cases. Histopathological examination of gastric biopsies revealed more number of gastritis both superficial and atrophic. Also intestinal metaplasia was a histopathological finding reported in one case. Histochemical studies of gastric mucosa showed more decreased mucopolysaccharides and alkaline phosphatases enzyme activity in late cases. The case of intestinal metaplasia showed goblet cells and brush border rich in mucopolysaccharides and alkaline phosphatases enzyme activity.
