Schistosomal nephropathy? I. Preliminary studies of a patient with schistosomiasis mansoni and glomerulonephritis in Puerto Rico

Detailed laboratory and clinical investigations of renal involvement in a patient with Schistosoma mansoni are reported. Serum and urine were highly positive for schistosomal antibody in precipitin tests with extracts of cercariae, adult worms and eggs. One serum sample reacted with an antiserum to schistosomal egg antigen. It is considered that these results support the hypothesis that circulating immune complexes are at least partially responsible for the renal involvement in S. mansoni infection.
