Vomiting is a consistent feature of acute intestinal obstruction. The underlying mechanism of emesis in intestinal obstruction has not been lucidated. Certain factors alone or in combination may be contributing to its genesis. In the present study emesis was evoked by inducing experimental acute intestinal obstruction in dogs. It was observed that the emesis of experimentally induced acute intestinal obstruction was not prevented by prior bilateral transthoracic supradiaphragmatic vagotomy, but was blocked by spinal cord transection at C7-T1. It was, therefore, concluded that the afferent neural pathways concerned in the emesis of intestinal obstruction travel through the sympathetics to the spinal cord wherefrom they traverse to the vomiting centre.
