In the light of the data now available, there can no longer be any doubt that the intrinsic muscles of the larynx (in cat and man) are provided with stretch-sensitive mechanoreceptors of low threshold and slow adaptation time. These mechanoreceptors are represented mainly by spiral nerve endings and (to a lesser extent) by muscle spindles (there are also tendon receptors whose reflex effects are inhibitory), afferent discharges from which contribute significantly to the bilaterally co-ordinated reflex regulation of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles. The possible role of these laryngeal myotatic reflexogenic systems in respiration and phonation has been considered in other publications from our Laboratory.
