Ketamine 250 mg I.M. has been used in the second stage of labor, in more than 3000 vaginal deliveries in combination with other premedications. Ketamine concentration in blood plasma of both mother and the umbilical cord has been studied with clinical evaluation of I) analgesic and anesthetic efficacy, 2) effects on labor (uterine contractions by tokodynamometer and blood loss during delivery), 3) effects on mothers (blood gas analysis, liver & kidney function, amnesia & dreams, cardiovascular & respiratory function), and 4) effects on newborns (blood gas analysis, liver function, Apgar score, weight loss and neonatal reflexes).
