A survey of the Culicidae of Lake Zarnowieckie, northern Poland, was conducted in 1981-85 prior to the construction of a nuclear power station in the area. Mosquitoes were caught at 11 sites around the lake: adults were caught (while resting) from cowsheds in the villages of Nadole, Kartoszyno and Brzyno; larvae, pupae and adults (from human bait catches) were caught in various habitats (peat bog and mixed deciduous forest); and larval and pupal stages were taken from a farm pond and a wayside ditch (human bait catches of adult females were also made at this site). A total of 19 651 mosquitoes were caught, of which 14 417 were larvae and/or pupae, and 5234 were adults. From this material 15 072 individuals were identified, representing 26 species from 4 genera (Aedes, Anopheles, Culex and Culiseta). Culex pipiens was the most common species (24.5% of the total), followed by Anopheles maculipennis s.l. (A. maculipennis s.s. and A. messeae, 16.9%), A. claviger (13.9%), Aedes punctor (10.7%) and A. cantans (10.0%). Anopheles spp. were the predominant species in cowsheds. Due to construction work on the nuclear power station, changes could be observed in the mosquito fauna over the 5-year study period.
