Comparative study of different emetine preparations

Comparative complement and. phagocytosis studies have been undertaken with two emetine-HC1 preparations, with dehydro-emetine and hydroxybutyl-dehydroemetine. None of these preparations has been found toxic to the serum complement components. Leucocytic phagocytosis was blocked by emetine-HCI, whereas dehydroemetine and hydroxybutyl-dehydro-emetine exerted a less potent, although still significant, inhibitory effect on phagocytosis. Similar results have been obtained when studying the effect of these compounds on phagocytosis enhanced by hyaluronidase. It is suggested that the effect exerted on phagocytois is a function of toxicity, and also an indicator of the drug's efficiency.
