Candida tropicalis skin infection: a follow-up case

A case is reported in a 37-yr-old man, whose wife was previously treated for C. tropicalis vaginitis, who presented with vesicles and pustules around the groin, scrotum and the perineum. Microscopic examination of vesicular fluids and pustules revealed numerous budding yeasts and C. tropicalis was isolated from skin scrapings from the infected parts. Therapy with clotrimazole was initiated; liberal applications several times daily for 14 d. By 7 d the lesions were healed. Urine, blood and stool samples yielded no yeasts. It is concluded that C. tropicalis may be sexually transmitted.
