During the 1st 5 days post partum, intake of human milk was lower in infants which developed septicaemia at days 4-10 of age than in a matched control group. Since the experimental group were at least as efficient as the controls in their ability to empty the breast, as ascertained by measurement of residual milk, it is concluded that their lower milk consumption was due to hypogalactia of the mothers.
