Effects of sodium penicillin G, sulfadimidine, sulfadimethoxine and flunixin meglumine on respiration and circulation after intravenous administration to the anesthetized horse

Six horses of different breeds with a body weight of 410-620 kg were anaesthetised (nitrous oxide, oxygen and halothane) and injected i/v with Na penicillin G at 6 million IU, sulfadimidine and sulfadimethoxine each at 3.3 g or flunixin-meglumine at 100 mg (all per 100 kg body weight). Flunixin-meglumine had no measurable effect on respiration and circulation. Na penicillin G and sulfadimethoxine decreased arterial blood pressure. Sulfadimidine decreased respiration rate, volume and arterial blood pressure. Na penicillin G and sulfadimethoxine had a central stimulative effect. It is concluded that these drugs should not be injected during inhalation anaesthesia in the horse.
