The solubilization of chloramphenicol by benzalkonium chloride was investigated. The combined bacteriostatic activities of various ratios of the two compounds were found to be synergistic. Within the concentrations of benzalkonium chloride commonly used in ophthalmic solutions, the combined bactericidal activity was also shown to be synergistic.
