1. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose, a new synthetic colloid laxative, has been tested for clinical effectiveness in 128 patients. Results with this "bulk" agent were as good or better than those with formerly used laxatives in 109 of these patients. Most of this group, who were accustomed to irritant or saline drugs, effected a satisfactory change to the colloid within 1 to 3 days on a dose of two 2 Gm. wafers a day. 2. No side reactions were reported by 109 of the group; in the 19 who had any complaints, the symptoms were of the sort commonly encountered in constipation, and none was of serious import. 3. This synthetic colloid appears to be an effective and safe "bulk" laxative for clinical use.
