Isolation of Campylobacter spp from the river Ganga in Varanasi

Examination of samples of water from the river Ganga at Varanasi demonstrated that different species of Campylobacter including C. jejuni were present and they could be isolated using simple techniques. The organisms were found in the water system throughout the eight months of observation without any noticeable seasonal variation. No significant correlation could be established between their prevalence and such ecological features as temperature, pH, DO and salinity of the water system.
