The cultivation and differentiation of C. jejuni and C. coli was described. The selective medium was Mueller-Hinton agar with 5% volume of human erythrocytes and the antibiotics vancomycin 10 mg/l polymixin 2500 IU/l, trimethoprim 5 mg/l, amphotericin 2 mg/l and cephalothin 15 mg/l. The microaerophilic atmosphere was not achieved with chemicals or with a gas mixture of 92% N2 and not 8% CO2. The differentiation between C. jujuni and C. coli was carried out by hipurate hydrolysis. This method is useful in the diagnosis of Campylobacter infections.
