The significance of the use of veterinary drugs in swine production and the effects on meat quality

Annual expeniditure on veterinary treatment of sows (2.3 million) and fattening pigs (39 million) in the German Federal Republic is estimated at 255 million DM. It is suggested that there is very little risk of drug residues for consumers of pig meat, providing that veterinary drugs are applied correctly, and that medicinal rules for dosing and prescription of drugs should be adopted to veterinary and economical requirements of preventive medicine. The other topic discussed is the injection of irritative compounds, which increases the risk of drug residue persistence and adversely affects the appearance of meat. It is concluded that standards for local compatibility of injectable drug preparations should be defined by the registration authorities, as they have been for pre-slaughter withdrawal times.
