Of the rodent-borne diseases, plague was known to exist in Israel and neighboring countries in biblical times and has been repeatedly reintroduced since then. The last cases in the area occurred in 1947. Other rodent -borne diseases encountered in Israel include murine typhus, salmonellosis and leptospirosis. The roof rat, Rat/us rattus, is found throughout Israel and neighboring countries, but has been completely replaced in Tel Aviv by R. norregicus. The latter species is spreading and displacing R. rattus throughout the country. A similar pattern may be occurring in other nearby countries.
