Urbanization in southeastern Asia, as in other parts of the world, has placed the local ecosystem under great pressure. As a result of the ecological changes in the urban environment, the distribution and bionomics of mosquitoes are changing, resulting in continued transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. This article lists the human ecological factors that in the urban situation lead to increased risk for these diseases, namely, unplanned human settlements, deterioration of water supply, unsupervised water storage practices, lack of sewerage facilities and swamp formation from sullage water.
