Subsynaptosomal fractions (intraterminal mitochondria, synaptic vesicles, synaptic membranes and supernatant) were prepared from rat brain. Their RNA was extracted and fractionated by electrophoresis on agarose-polyacrylamide microgels. RNA from intraterminal mitochondria resembled the one which can be extracted from cell body mitochondria. The fraction corresponding to synaptic vesicles presented RNA types corresponding to microsomal ribonucleic acid. RNA which was extracted from synaptic membranes was mainly of the microsomal type, only occasionally a few small bands in the 4S-18S range were observed. Supernatant RNA was entirely 4S yielding a microelectrophoretic pattern similar to the one found for axoplasmic RNA in the giant axon of the squid.
