In 40 patients aged 55-70. Verapamil (nifedipine) was significantly more successful in controlling hypertension than furosemide. In 7 of 14 in whom furosemide controlled hypertension, it was to the same extent as with Verapamil. However, furosemide gave more side-effects. The use of a single drug is important, especially for the elderly. Since Verapamil is more effective, it seems advantageous to start with it in this age group and to use furosemide as first treatment only in those who need diuretics for other reasons.
