In 64 elderly and senile patients with stage II hypertensive disease and 39 patients of the same age group with atherosclerotic (systolic) hypertension treated with rauvasan and dopegit, systemic hemodynamics, gaseous composition and acid-base balance of the arterial and venous blood were examined by the methods of dye dilution, polarography, van Slyke's method and Astrup's micromethod. A lowering of general peripheral resistance resulting, as a rule, in a better oxygenation of organs and tissues was a more favorable mechanism of the arterial pressure reduction. A diminution of the cardiac output was rather frequently accompanied with a progress of hypoxic shifts. From the viewpoint of its effect on the oxygen homeostasis, hypotensive therapy was more effective in patients with hypertensive disease than in those with systolic (atherosclerotic) hypertension, and in elderly patients as compared to senile ones.
