The ganglioside compostion of the growth cone isolated from primary cultures of nerve cells was studied. Ganglioside GM1 and GD1a are the predominant gangliosides in the growth cone. Both GM1 and GD1a may be most important membrane components of growth cones that play a role in guiding for the neural recognition during development.
