Invasive Trichosporon cutaneum infection: an increasing problem in immunosuppressed patients

A case of invasive pulmonary infection and fungaemia due to T. cutaneum [T. beigelii] is reported in a 44-yr-old man following bone marrow transplantation. The infection was manifst by severe respiratory distress and hypoxaemia despite a clear chest X-ray, and was diagnosed by the identification of fungal hyphae in a percutaneous lung aspirate and by culture of T. beigelii from the blood. The patient recovered following treatment with amphotericin B, miconazole and ketoconazole. A further 42 cases from the literature of systemic T. beigelii infection in immunosuppressed patients are reviewed.
