Studies on the fetal and infant macaque may provide valuable information about a period of bone formation for which normal human data are usually not available. While smaller mammals such as rabbits, rats, and mice provide many experimental advantages to the investigator, their placental type, pre- and postnatal growth curves, and skeletal physiology differ significantly from those of the human species. The macaque monkey has been shown to exhibit striking parallels in bone dynamics to age-comparable human data, and may provide a good, although not exact, model for the investigation of aspects of bone dynamics applicable to human bone.
