Modulation of muscle dehydrogenases by ascorbic acid in exhausted albino rats

A significant drop in lactate, succinate and malate oxidations was observed in skeletal muscles of albino rat following prolonged swim to exhaustion. White vastus showed greater decrement as compared to red vastus and gastrocnemius. Oral administration of ascorbic acid (400 mg/kg body wt/day) for seven days restored lactate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase activities to normalcy in fatigued muscles of rat. The restoration was more effective in gastrocnemius than in other muscles. The possible modulatory influence of ascorbic acid in restoration of oxidative enzyme activities to normal levels and in maintenance of metabolic homeostasis during intense activity has been discussed.
