L-Ascorbic acid was administered to pregnant rats in daily oral doses of 150, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg in a first trial from day 6 to day 15 of pregnancy and in a second trial from day 0 p.c. to day 21 p.p. Mice were given daily oral doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg respectively from day 6 to day 15 of pregnancy. In these high doses L-ascorbic acid showed no adult-toxic or fetotoxic effects and was not teratogenic. The daily oral administration of the same high doses from day 0 p.c. to day 21 p.p. to rats had no influence on the embryonic, fetal and postpartum development of the young animals as well as on pregnancy, parturition, breeding instinct and lactation capacity in the mother animals.
