In vitro addition of Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ caused significant stimulation in the activities of hepatic dehydroascorbatase and 2,3-diketoaldonate decarboxylase. Ca2+ at graded concentration effected proportional increase in the activities of ascorbic acid catabolizing enzymes. In vivo effect of calcium gluconate showed increase in serum Ca2+, as well as in ascorbic acid catabolism. Adrenalectomy led to an increase in serum Ca2+ and ascorbic acid degradation, which could be retrieved by DOCA administration. The mode of DOCA action on ascorbic acid catabolism has been discussed. It appears that ascorbic acid biosynthesis in adrenalectomized rats is regulated by hydrocortisone through restoration of L-gulono-.gamma.-lactone oxidase activity.
