Gengniankang did not increase the weight or reactivity of the testes to pituitary. LH in old rats. No androgen activity was observed. The hCG/LH receptor function of testis and the responsivity of the pituitary to LRH were enhanced by Gengniankang in old rats. By adjusting the function of the hormonal receptors the regulatory function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonads axis was improved, suggesting a possible endocrine mechanism of Gengniankang in curing hypogonadism and climacteric syndrome of male and female.
