The effect of giving garlic (equivalent to 7 g fresh garlic daily) during 5 months to 9 hyperlipaemic subjects was studied. During the first 3 months serum cholesterol increased, but by 5 months had returned to baseline values. Increase may be due to the regression of atherosclerotic lesions, or to the unrestricted dietary intake of the subjects. There was a gradual decrease in serum triglycerides and a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
