Adequacy of breast milk

A longitudinal six months followup was done in 273 breast fed and 234 artificially fed babies. Both the groups of babies showed similar growth pattern, with faltering in growth around 3 to 5 months period. Breast milk appeared to have lost its adequacy in the 3rd month in AGA term babies and 4th month in SGA term babies and hence weaning should be started around this period. Artificial feeding with milk of higher protein content had no advantage over breast feeding as both the groups of infants were below the expected normal (50th percentile of Harvard Standard).
