The low ionic strength solution (LISS) widely used in transfusion laboratories has been modified to include red cell preservatives and antibiotics. The new solution was tested in parallel with LISS and found not only to have comparable sensitivity, but to extend shelf life to 21 days. This has proved particularly useful in the maintenance of red cell antibody identification panels and the provision of screening cells.
